Sheikh Mohammed honours Egyptian professor with 'Great Arab Minds' award

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has congratulated Egyptian professor Abbas El Gamal for winning the Great Arab Minds award.

Professor El Gamal, Hitachi America Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University, has been honoured in the field of engineering and technology for his "pioneering scientific contributions in network information theory that laid the foundation for many modern digital networks around the world".

He has lead key developments in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), driving progress in circuit design and computing, and played a leading role in developing CMOS image sensors, the core technology behind smartphone cameras and modern imaging devices.

Professor El Gamal's work has also helped develop technologies that support digital sensing, computing and communication systems. He has published more than 230 research papers and authored influential works, including Network Information Theory, widely used by students and researchers globally.

Sheikh Mohammed congratulated "Egypt and the Arab world for this prodigy who proves to the world that our nation does not just consume technologies, but possesses minds capable of creating them and leading their scientific future".

Launched by Sheikh Mohammed in 2022, the Great Arab Minds Award aims to celebrate the achievements of outstanding Arab individuals across six categories, including medicine, economics, natural sciences, engineering and technology, architecture and design, and literature and arts.
