New agreement to boost drone filming in Dubai

The Dubai Media Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority to facilitate drone-based media filming operations in the emirate.

The agreement was signed in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Chairman of the DMC, as part of the ‘Dubai From the Sky’ initiative.

The MoU aims to simplify the process for obtaining permits for media-related drone operations, ensuring timely coverage of events.

Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Vice Chairperson and Managing Director of the DMC, expressed gratitude for the DCAA's collaboration, highlighting the essential role of media in society and the need for high-quality content.

“Rapid technological advancements require skilled professionals who can leverage new media tools,” Al Marri noted, emphasising the creative potential of drone photography.

Mohammed Abdullah Lengawi, Director-General of the DCAA, described the MoU as a significant initiative that underscores the authority's dedication to supporting vital sectors, including media.

He stressed the importance of establishing a secure environment for drone operations, allowing for creativity and innovation in content production while maintaining airspace safety.

The partnership will prioritise training programs accredited by the DCAA for drone operators in the media sector.

These programs will cover both technical and safety aspects, ensuring compliance with the authority’s standards. Trainees selected by the DMC will receive professional licenses upon completion.

Additionally, the two organisations will collaborate to identify suitable locations for aerial filming and establish permissible altitudes, further ensuring safety in Dubai’s airspace.
