Dubai has started to trial AI-powered smart cameras to catch those littering in public spaces to ensure the Emirate maintains its position as of one of the cleanest cities in the world.
The cameras, the Dubai Municipality announced, will be installed on a number of waste collection and transportation vehicles.
Those caught littering and improperly disposing furniture and bulky waste will face fines of AED 500, the authority reminded.
It's part of the “Smart Waste Management” framework that aims to improve monitoring of cleanliness levels on roads and in residential areas, and identify locations of illegal waste dumping. It will also speed up responses to violations, allowing field teams to take swift action based on real-time data analysis of the images.
Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, said the outcomes of the pilot phase will be evaluated ahead of any expansion of the system’s implementation.
Engineer Adel Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of the Waste and Sewerage Agency, said the system helps document violations accurately and accelerate corrective measures, while protecting community privacy in line with Dubai’s smart city and digital transformation goals.
The project falls within Dubai Municipality’s efforts to support the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2041, enhancing the sustainability of public cleanliness and quality of life.
