Dubai Police cracks down on reckless teens for flouting e-bike rules

Dubai Police

Dubai Police have cracked down on reckless young bikers for speeding over 100kmph on walking and cycling tracks.

A total of 101 electric bikes have been impounded and 130 fines issued in a single week following checks across several areas, including Nad Al Sheba.

Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police said some individuals had modified their bikes to increase speed, posing a serious threat to other road users, pedestrians and themselves.

He highlighted that e-bikes are designed for recreational use and shouldn't be used on "sports tracks".

Violators, mostly in their teens, were apprehended, legal actions taken and their parents summoned to raise awareness about the dangers of leaving children unsupervised.

Dubai Police urged families to educate their children on wearing safety gear, following traffic rules and riding only on designated tracks.

According to the UAE traffic laws, e-scooters are allowed maximum speed of 20 kmph. They can ride, only on designated routes, after obtaining a permit from the RTA.

Riders will be fined AED 300 for riding on roads where the speed limit exceeds 60kmph and AED 200 for riding without a valid RTA permit. Parking a scooter in non-designated zones or obstructing pedestrian or vehicle traffic also results in a fine of AED200.
