Abu Dhabi has been designated a 'City of Music' by UNESCO.

It's in recognition of the emirate's efforts to promote and invest in music as part of its social development and economic diversification strategy.

Abu Dhabi joins cities such as Liverpool, Auckland, Sevilla and Chennai on the UNESCO list.

The designation significantly enhances the emirate’s position on the international music stage and will further support the development of the local music scene.

The UNESCO Network of Creative Cities, which includes the Cities of Music, was launched in 2004 with the aim of highlighting the role of culture and creativity in sustainable urban development.

In addition to Abu Dhabi, the newly designated Cities of Music include Batumi (Georgia), Belfast (Ireland), Huancayo (Peru), Ibagué (Colombia), Kharkiv (Ukraine), London (Canada), Port Louis (Mauritius), Recife (Brazil), Santiago de Cuba (Cuba), Tallinn (Estonia) and Xalapa (Mexico).
