Abu Dhabi Airports to lead emirate-wide vertiport network

Abu Dhabi Airports has been given the official mandate to develop a network of vertiports across the emirate — key infrastructure that will support the launch of electric air taxis in the coming years.

The project will see more than ten vertiports built at strategic urban and transport hubs, with the first phase centered at Zayed International and Al Bateen Executive airports.

These hubs will support eVTOL aircraft — quiet, battery-powered air taxis capable of carrying up to four passengers — offering a cleaner, faster alternative to traditional helicopters. The first flights are expected by 2026.

Abu Dhabi Airports is partnering with Skyports Infrastructure to design and operate the vertiports, marking a major step toward integrating advanced air mobility into the region’s transport system.

Once construction is complete, both entities intend to partner on vertiport operations, including passenger handling, security processing, cargo operations and integration with the eVTOL operators.

While initial routes will be limited in range due to current battery technology, ongoing advancements are expected to unlock longer journeys over time, potentially connecting locations such as Al Ain with Zayed International Airport and supporting inter-emirate travel.

"The strong collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, Integrated Transport Centre, and the General Civil Aviation Authority has been instrumental in turning this ambitious initiative into a reality, paving the way toward an even more connected, innovative, and sustainable future for the UAE," said Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports.
