Formula 1 to race in Mexico City until 2028

AFP

Formula 1 has announced that the Mexico City Grand Prix will remain on the calendar through 2028 as part of a new three-year extension starting from 2026.

Mexico currently has no active Formula One driver but Sergio Perez, who raced for Red Bull until the end of last year, has been linked to a comeback with the new Cadillac team due to debut in 2026.

The news was expected after Mexico City's head of government Clara Brugada said a contract would be signed ahead of this week's Miami Grand Prix.

The race, held in Mexico City, returned to the Formula One calendar in 2015.

Over 405,000 spectators attended the event in 2024 when Carlos Sainz secured his final victory for Ferrari before his move to Williams.

Alejandro Soberón Kuri, President and CEO of Corp Interamericana Entreten (CIE) stated: "This not only contributes to the economic development of Mexico City, but also promotes our city, as well as our country, in a significant way worldwide.

"Together, we will continue to work hard to ensure that fans get the most out of an event that offers a unique live entertainment experience, and which for almost 10 years has shown the world the quality of the events we organise in this city.”

The 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix will take place from October 24–26, 2025.
