Rare ant species discovered in Sharjah's Wadi Shees

WAM

Sharjah’s Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) has announced a new scientific discovery — a rare ant species found in Wadi Shees.

Named Carebara Sharjahensis, or the Sharjah Ant, it’s the first of its genus recorded in the UAE and only the third in the Arabian Peninsula.

Experts say its rarity and subterranean lifestyle make it hard to detect, highlighting the rich biodiversity of the Hajar Mountains.

The discovery was made by Professor Dr. Mustafa Sharaf from the Al Dhaid Wildlife Centre after extensive field surveys.

Only a single “soldier” ant was found, suggesting the species lives in highly specialised underground habitats and is extremely difficult to detect.

EPAA says the find highlights the rich biodiversity of the Hajar Mountains and reflects Sharjah’s commitment to scientific research and environmental conservation.

The scientific study revealed that Carebara Sharjahensis bears partial resemblance to a species recorded in Zimbabwe, yet it displays distinct anatomical features, most notably the presence of well-developed lateral horns on both sides of the head, accompanied by fine sensory hairs.

The ant also possesses a uniform yellow coloration and several precise structural traits in the head and thorax.

Researchers are continuing efforts to locate additional members of the colony, including the queen and worker ants, to learn more about the species and its habitat.
