Al Ain Zoo provides safe haven for endangered 'Nile lechwe'

For Ilustration

A rare species of antelope has found a new home, thanks to Al Ain Zoo.

The Nile lechwe is classified in the Red List by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) as an endangered species on the verge of extinction due to overhunting and the building of dams.

It's usually found in the Nile Basin of Sudan and on the borders of Ethiopia, in shallow waters 10 to 40 centimetres in depth.

A herd of ten Nile lechwes will soon move into Al Ain Safari, the largest man-made safari in the world.
