A 100-year-old residential building has collapsed in Mumbai, killing at least three people and trapping dozens.

The four-storey block came down in the Dongri area of the city, with over 40 people estimated to be trapped in the rubble.

Search and rescue operations are underway, with reports that five people, including a two-year-old, have so far been safely removed from the site.

Access to the scene for emergency vehicles is being hampered by the narrow lanes around the building.

The heavily populated area, which is said to have a number of dilapidated buildings, was flooded in recent weeks following heavy rain.
