The death toll from coronavirus in Iran touched 2,757 on Monday, prompting authorities to consider tougher restrictions to contain the spread of the virus.

The total number of infections climbed to 41,495, with Iran's first Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri hinting at introducing "tougher measures" to portect the "nation's safety and health".

The country has already implemented an intercity travel ban since Thursday, and extended the closure of schools and universities.

Cultural, religious and sporting events have also been suspended.

Meanwhile, Iran's judiciary on Sunday extended furloughs for 100,000 prisoners in a bid to stem the spread of the virus in crowded jails.
