Michael Douglas: Fixing our marriage was hard work

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones worked hard to save their marriage. The couple, who married in 2000, briefly split in 2013 following various stresses in their personal lives. They got back together just a few months later, with both Michael and Catherine making the commitment to fixing their relationship. He said: "It took work on both our parts. I don't think there's much chance of fixing a relationship if one of you is already out the door." It was the stress over Michael's battle with cancer in 2010 and the revelation that Catherine suffers from bipolar disorder that caused the temporary break from the romance. But now they are happier than ever, with Catherine adding to AARP magazine: "I think we're both mellower and wiser. That comes naturally with time. We count our blessings." Catherine and Michael are parents to children Carys and Dylan, with Michael also father to son Cameron from his previous marriage. The 37-year-old has also battled a difficult personal life, and has been in jail since 2010 on drug charges. After having his original sentence extended on numerous occasions, he will now remain incarcerated until 2018. Michael told the publication he feels regret over the fact he didn't spend more time with Cameron as he grew up. He said: "When you're busy all the time, you don't think about a whole lot of things other than the realities that are in front of you. "Now I see him twice a month now because he's incarcerated closer to our home. He's a drug addict, but he's done more than his fair share of time for it." Michael has been enjoying huge success in recent months, thanks to his roles in movies such as the hit Marvel adaptation 'Ant-Man'. He is also back to full health, having beaten cancer, and is determined to be as present as possible as his youngest children mature. He added: "It's been five years, and I feel really good, but you have a new appreciation. I'm more motivated, more responsible. My younger kids could be my grandchildren. I want to be here a while."
