WAM

Sharjah Football Club has been awarded AED 20 million in recognition of their historic victory in the AFC Champions League 2.

The announcement came from His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who received the team on Tuesday at Al Badi’ Palace.

Sharjah FC registered a 2-1 win over Singapore’s Lion City Sailors in the final last Sunday. The victory came in dramatic fashion at Singapore’s Bishan Stadium, with the winning goal scored in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

His Highness congratulated the players, as well as the club’s administrative and technical staff, for securing the first AFC Champions League 2 title in the club’s and the UAE’s history.

He called it a moment of pride for the entire nation and said the win ends years of anticipation for such an achievement.

Sheikh Sultan also underlined the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship and unity within the football community, calling on players to commit themselves fully when representing the national team.

Praising UAE national team coach Cosmin Olăroiu, His Highness encouraged players to give their best and to honour the trust placed in them.

He also recalled his own passion for football, especially during the UAE’s qualification for the 1990 World Cup.
