Asked to bat first in Chennai, Bangladesh scored 245-9 with Mushfiqur Rahim (66 off 75 balls), Mahmudullah (unbeaten 41 off 49) and skipper Shakib Al Hasan (40 off 51) contributing the bulk of the runs.
Lockie Ferguson took three wickets (3-49) while Trent Boult (2-45) and Matt Henry (2-58) chipped in with two wickets each.
For New Zealand, Daryl Mitchell was unbeaten on 89 off 67 balls while captain Kane Williamson struck a fluid 78 (107 balls) before retiring hurt with a hand injury.
