Dangerous weather suspends play at PGA Championship

via X

The third round of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club did not begin as scheduled on Saturday as play was suspended due to dangerous weather in the area moments before Masters champion Rory McIlroy was about to tee off.

McIlroy, who made the cut on the number and was nine shots back of halfway leader Jhonattan Vegas, was on the bridge headed toward the first tee for his 8:25 a.m. ET tee time when the horn sounded to signal play was suspended.

The Northern Irishman, who was set to head out in the second pairing with defending champion Xander Schauffele, was none too pleased as he slumped his head, turned around and grinned in disbelief while appearing to utter a profanity.

The opening twosome of Max Greyserman and Sam Burns had yet to hit their tee shots.

About an hour earlier, practice at the year's second major was suspended for 17 minutes due to dangerous weather and those outside were instructed to seek shelter.

There was a severe thunderstorm watch in the area until 12:00 p.m. ET while scattered showers were expected to exit the area around 10:00 a.m. and give way to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon.
