Staff at the US Embassy in Baghdad have been moved to safety after protests outside their compound turned violent.

Hundreds of people stormed the embassy as anger over US airstrikes on Iraq erupted into violence.

According to reports, a security kiosk at the entrance of the US Embassy was set on fire but the main compound was not breached as security forces fired tear gas.

US planes on Sunday attacked bases belonging to Kataib Hezbollah militia after a US civilian contractor was killed in a rocket attack.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump held Tehran responsible for the attack.
