A surfer has died in Australia after being attacked by a great white shark that was nearly three metre long.

The 60-year-old man was surfing at Kingscliff, near the south of Brisbane, on Sunday morning when the shark mauled his left leg.

Several other surfers and board-riders had fought the shark off before pulling him to the shore.

He was also rendered first-aid but died on the beach.

Beaches between Kingscliff and Cabarita will be closed for 24 hours.
