New Zealand police plan retrieval of bodies on volcanic island

Marty MELVILLE / AFP

Police in New Zealand are finalising a plan to retrieve bodies from the volcanic White Island on Friday, despite the risk of another eruption.

Officials said families of the eight people thought to be on the island will be briefed on the operation.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the disaster climbed to eight, with two more people succumbing to their injuries.

More than 20 people continue to be treated in intensive care for severe burns.

This comes as New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern ordering an inquiry into how the tourists were allowed on the island despite a warning in place.
