CIA agent who inspired 'Argo' dies aged 78

Former CIA agent Tony Mendez, who inspired Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning movie Argo, has died. He was 78.

He had been suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

Mendez is best known for engineering a creative way to smuggle US hostages out of Iran in 1980 by posing as a film producer.

He will have a private burial in Nevada.

“Tony Mendez was a true American hero,” Affleck wrote on Twitter.

Tony Mendez was a true American hero. He was a man of extraordinary grace, decency, humility and kindness. He never sought the spotlight for his actions, he merely sought to serve his country. I’m so proud to have worked for him and to have told one of his stories. #RIPTonyMendez
