Four children in Australia have been found safe after they took one of their parents cars and drove over 900 kilometres away.

According to local police, a 14-year-old boy, two 13-year-old boys and a 10-year-old girl took the vehicle from Gracemere in Queensland, along with some fishing rods and money.

They then drove the four-wheel-drive car south to Grafton in New South Wales, stealing petrol on the way.

The children were spotted in Glen Innes and Highway Patrol pursued the vehicle but the chase was called off due to the young ages of the assailants.

Police eventually tracked the car down but had to use batons to enter as the children refused to open the door.
