Australian TV show Neighbours has been cancelled and will air its final episode in December, the programme's official social media accounts confirmed.

The show has been running for 40 years and was axed two years ago before being given another lease of life.

Neighbours was taken off air in the UK by Channel 5 after it failed to secure funding, before being revived by Amazon Freeve and Freemantle.

The show follows the lives of the residents of Erinsborough, a fictional suburb of Melbourne.

The show helped launch the careers of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Margot Robbie.
