A gold medal from the 1904 Olympic Games has sold for over half a million dollars at auction. The medal, from the St. Louis Olympics, was one of hundreds of items sold from various editions of the Games.
The hammer came down on the item at $545,371 (AED 2 million).
The rare medal is inscribed with "Olympiad, 1904" and shows an athlete holding a wreath in one hand with his other arm aloft, along with other athletes in the background. On the reverse is Nike, the goddess of victory in ancient Greek mythology.
American Fred Schule won the medal at the Games, which still has its original ribbon and leather case.
The 1904 Olympics was the first to award gold medals, which were made entirely of gold - unlike today's medals.
A total of 100 gold medals were awarded at the 1904 Olympic Games.
Other items that went under the hammer included a bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics, along with gold medals from the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, 1964 Tokyo Olympics, 1998 Nagano Olympics and 2012 London Olympics.
