Watch: Dubai tests self-driving vehicle for cleaning cycling paths

Dubai Municipality is testing a self-driving electric vehicle for cleaning the cycling paths along Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim beaches.

The 'smart sweeper' is equipped with sensors that enable it to avoid obstacles and ensure a higher productivity rate compared to manual cleaning devices.

It can operate for eight hours on a single charge at a maximum speed of 40 kmph in normal operation mode.

The municipality launched five large-scale sweepers with advanced technology earlier this year to sweep roughly 2,250 km of outdoor roadways in Dubai on a daily basis.

This has enhanced its 752-vehicle automated waste operations management fleet with a variety of pavement and road cleaning equipment and large-scale agricultural waste shredding and processing equipment for plantations, public parks and tree residues.

The municipality has also assigned a field team of 12 staff to supervise 72 cleaners who work around the clock to keep Dubai's public beaches clean.
