"May the year ahead be one of peace, prosperity and happiness for you and your families," Sheikh Mohamed said on Twitter.

He posted his greetings in three different languages: Arabic, English and Hindi.

Diwali, which is known as the festival of lights, is a major Hindu religious festival. The occasion is also marked by Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists.

It symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
