The UAE Ministry of Interior is hosting a pivotal workshop on the GCC Strategy for Combating Drugs (2025-2028) at Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi running until September 19.

This workshop marks a significant regional initiative, developed in collaboration with the General Secretariat of the GCC and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The event aims to enhance international cooperation and establish a unified approach to drug control across the GCC region. Key figures at the workshop include Jasim Al-Badawi, Secretary-General of the GCC; Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Interior; Judge Dr. Hatem Aly, Regional Representative of the UNODC for the GCC; and Brigadier Mubarak Saeed Al Khaili, Head of the GCC Police Force.

In his opening speech, Al-Badawi expressed gratitude to the UAE for hosting the workshop and praised the collaborative efforts in drafting the unified GCC Strategy. He highlighted the workshop's role in addressing the severe challenge of drug smuggling, which impacts not only individuals but also families and societies at large. "Drugs represent a threat not only to health and social security but are also a key factor undermining economic and political stability," he said.

Major General Al Khaili echoed these sentiments, emphasising the UAE's commitment to adopting best security practices and implementing pioneering policies to combat drug-related issues. He noted that the workshop's interactive nature is crucial for developing effective strategies and enhancing regional cooperation.

Judge Dr. Hatem Aly conveyed the support of Ghada Wali, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the UNODC, and commended the GCC's longstanding collaboration in drug prevention and control. He described the workshop as a landmark event, aimed at unifying regional and international expertise to create a comprehensive drug control strategy.

The sessions are addressing international and regional frameworks, drug market trends, and policy developments. Discussions will focus on integrating international agreements with regional strategies and developing practical solutions aligned with UN standards.

The workshop is expected to lead to practical strategies for combating drug trafficking and enhancing regional cooperation, reflecting a strong commitment to addressing this critical issue.
