UAE among global leaders in nuclear security progress

The United Arab Emirates has made significant progress in the 2026 Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) Nuclear Security Index, ranking fourth out of 48 countries assessed for protecting nuclear facilities against sabotage.

The UAE also ranked joint 15th among 154 countries and areas assessed on efforts to prevent the theft of nuclear materials.

The index, developed by the NTI in partnership with Economist Enterprise, assesses countries on areas including physical protection, cybersecurity, security culture, international cooperation and national preparedness.

Finland topped the overall rankings, followed by Canada in second place and Switzerland in third, with Australia sharing fourth place with the UAE.

Hamad Al Kaabi, Director-General of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), said the results reflect the UAE’s long-term commitment to maintaining a strong and continuously improving nuclear security system.

He added that the nuclear security environment is constantly evolving, requiring regulators, operators and national authorities to remain vigilant and prepared for emerging risks.

Since its establishment, the FANR has developed and strengthened the UAE’s regulatory framework for nuclear security, overseeing nuclear facilities and nuclear and radioactive materials, and conducting inspections to ensure compliance.

The UAE also continues to work with the International Atomic Energy Agency and other international partners to exchange expertise, strengthen national capabilities and support global nuclear security efforts.

In its 2026 assessment, the NTI identified the UAE among 12 countries driving global progress in nuclear security, recognising nations that have strengthened domestic measures, supported international cooperation and increased engagement with global institutions.
