Sheikh Mansour approves family charter to protect children after divorce

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, has approved a resolution to protect children’s wellbeing and stability after a divorce.

The Post-Separation Charter – Year of Family aims to promote children’s psychological and social stability, and ensures both parents continue to play an active role in their upbringing.

It is based on the principle that a divorce doesn't stop a child’s need for shared care, safe contact and a stable environment that fosters a sense of security and belonging.

The charter aims to ensure both parents have a say in their children’s moral and religious upbringing, in accordance with Emirati customs and traditions, as well as education, healthcare, alongside behavioural and cultural guidance.

It outlines a framework guiding the parents on visitation rights, overnight stays, travel and maintenance, while reinforcing the need to protect the child from arguments and disputes. In case of disagreements with the implementation of the charter, the case will be referred to the Family Guidance Centre before it is moved to the court.

The parents are also prohibited from using the children as a "means of pressure, bargaining, or harm".
