Two earthquakes struck southern Iran on Sunday, following which mild tremors were felt in the UAE and other Gulf countries.

According to the UAE's National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the first earthquake recorded a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale.

It struck at 04.07 pm (UAE time) and was centred near Bandar Abbas.

A second earthquake hit the same area about a minute later with a magnitude of 6.7.

The NCM said the impact of the earthquakes was slightly felt in the northern and eastern side of the UAE.

It added that the cause of the earthquake is due to the tectonic movement on the Zagros Mountain belt in Southern Iran.

Several residents in the UAE reported feeling aftershocks of the earthquake.
