Nearly 50 per cent of Dubai's taxi fleet consists of hybrid or electric vehicles.

That's according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), which said the fleet comprises of 2,434 hybrid vehicles, 170 electric cars and three hybrid limousines.

Franchise companies operating taxis in Dubai add another 2,076 hybrid vehicles, totaling the city's count of eco-friendly vehicles to 4,683 as of 2020.

It's part of the agency's target to convert the entire collection of vehicles to be environment friendly by 2027.

These changes are also aligned with plans to achieve targets set by the Green Economy for Sustainable Development, UAE Vision 2021, and Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030.

A statement from the RTA reports a carbon emissions reduction of 34 per cent.
