The engineer who led the Emirates Mars Mission has been appointed as a member of the UAE Diplomatic and Consular Corps with the rank of ambassador.

Omran Sharaf has also been appointed as Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to handle the Advanced Science and Technology portfolio.

The 38-year-old earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia, USA, in 2005, and his Master's in Science and Technology Policy from the Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea, in 2013.
