Dubai Police have urged the public to be extra vigilant while accepting part-time jobs online after a man was "hired" to carry out illegal money transfers for a fixed commission.
Investigations by the Crime Prevention Department at Dubai Police revealed that the man accepted the job that would involve receiving and transferring funds using his newly opened bank account.
Posing as part of an financial services company, the gang convinced the man, named 'S' by the authorities, that his bank account would be used for "administrative purposes" as part of "settling transactions or processing client transfers". He was promised "continued work and a permanent position".
Police officials interrogated the man after they traced the illegal money trail to him.
The man pleaded innocence, claiming he was unaware of working for a criminal network.
Officials warned that "in some cases, victims' bank accounts are exploited in suspicious operations entirely without their knowledge".
Criminal organisations often use "money mules" to move stolen funds through legitimate bank accounts to evade law enforcement.
Dubai Police, through the "Be Aware of Fraud" campaign, urged the public to verify the authenticity of part-time job opportunities and to report fraudulent activities through the eCrime platform or by calling 901.
