Dubai Customs foils attempt to smuggle endangered bears through airport

Dubai Customs said on Thursday it stopped an attempt to smuggle rare endangered animals through Dubai International Airport after officers discovered concealed bears inside a passenger’s luggage.

Authorities said the suitcase, belonging to an Asian passenger arriving in the UAE, was flagged during routine screening after inspection systems detected suspicious contents.

A manual search uncovered a hidden basket containing the animals, which were later confirmed dead by a veterinarian from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.

Officials said the bears belonged to a protected endangered species covered under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, commonly known as CITES.

During questioning, the passenger reportedly told investigators she had agreed to transport the suitcase in exchange for payment and was expecting to hand it over to another person upon arrival.

Authorities said the case highlights a common smuggling method in which travellers are used as couriers to transport prohibited goods.

Dubai Customs said the incident was referred to the Environmental Crimes Unit at Dubai Police for further legal action.

Officials also warned travellers against carrying luggage or packages for others without knowing their contents, saying such practices can expose individuals to criminal liability.

The UAE has strengthened enforcement measures in recent years to combat wildlife trafficking and protect endangered species under international conservation agreements.
