Dubai boosts driving test accuracy and transparency with smart system

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a next-generation Smart Test System for light-vehicle driving tests, using artificial intelligence, computer vision and advanced data analytics.

The system is designed to make yard driving assessments more accurate, consistent and transparent, while improving the customer experience and enhancing safety during tests.

AI-powered technology monitors learner performance in real time, including manoeuvres, mirror and blind-spot checks, and hand positioning on the steering wheel.

The system also uses facial recognition to verify the learner’s identity and calculates test results automatically against standardised criteria.

A key upgrade is the use of Real-Time Kinematic positioning technology, which can track the vehicle’s location within the test yard to an accuracy of around two centimetres.

Following the test, learners can review their vehicle’s route on an interactive 3D map and see visual evidence of where errors occurred, helping them understand their results and identify areas for improvement.

The system also includes preventive automatic braking technology, which can intervene when a potential collision or safety risk is detected.

"It is designed to ensure that learner drivers are evaluated against consistent and precise criteria, minimising inconsistencies in assessment, strengthening customer confidence in test results and providing a clearer and more transparent testing experience," said Sultan Al Akraf, Director of Drivers Licensing at the RTA's Licensing Agency.

The initiative supports Dubai’s wider efforts to use smart technologies and artificial intelligence to improve driver licensing services, road safety and the overall testing experience.
