A red alert has been issued in three districts in the south Indian state of Kerala as extremely heavy rains are forecast for the region over the next couple of days.

The red alert has been sounded in Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Idukki districts on Tuesday and in northern districts of Malappuram and Kozhikode on Wednesday.

'Orange alert' has been issued in six districts - Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram - on Tuesday.

This comes as the flood-hit northern parts are slowly limping back to normalcy, and death toll from the floods climbed to 88.
