At least 21 people have died after a migrant boat sank off Senegal’s northern coast, with only one survivor rescued so far.

The country’s interior ministry says 21 bodies had been recovered by Saturday evening.

The boat went down off Kébémer, around 180 kilometres north of the capital Dakar.

Search and rescue operations are continuing, with authorities looking for possible additional survivors.

Officials have not said how many people were on board.

Thousands of people have died in recent years while attempting the Atlantic route from West Africa to Spain’s Canary Islands.
