UAE calls for stronger Euro-Mediterranean, Gulf cooperation to drive sustainable growth

WAM

Federal National Council Speaker Saqr Ghobash has called for closer economic and parliamentary cooperation between Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf countries to help address rapid technological and economic change and support sustainable development.

Speaking at the fourth Marrakesh Parliamentary Economic Forum for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Region in Morocco, Ghobash said the participating countries have the resources, expertise and market potential needed to build a successful model of regional economic cooperation.

He described the forum as an important platform for turning shared ambitions into practical partnerships and projects that deliver tangible benefits across the region.

Ghobash highlighted economic integration, increased trade and investment, improved infrastructure and logistics networks, and the exchange of knowledge and expertise as key drivers of long-term growth and competitiveness.

He also stressed the importance of investing in people, particularly through education, skills development, innovation and entrepreneurship. He said empowering young people and increasing women's participation in the economy remain critical to sustainable development.

Addressing the impact of technological change, Ghobash said advances in artificial intelligence, digital technologies and the wider digital economy present significant opportunities to boost growth and improve quality of life. He called for continued investment in innovation, digital infrastructure and workforce development.

Sustainability was another key focus of his remarks, with Ghobash highlighting the economic opportunities presented by clean energy, green technologies and environmentally sustainable development.

He said the UAE's own development model is built on investment in human capital, economic diversification, innovation and sustainability, while maintaining strong international partnerships aimed at promoting shared prosperity.

Ghobash also underlined the role of parliaments in supporting economic development through modern legislation, improving the investment climate, encouraging innovation and strengthening transparency and good governance.

He said parliamentary diplomacy provides an effective channel for dialogue and cooperation, helping countries exchange expertise and support initiatives that strengthen economic and development ties.

Concluding his address, Ghobash said the shared interests and capabilities of Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf nations provide a strong foundation for deeper cooperation and new partnerships that can support sustainable growth and prosperity across the region.

He also highlighted the longstanding relationship between the UAE and Morocco, noting that ties between the two countries continue to expand across a range of sectors under the guidance of their respective leaderships.
