Mitsubishi fuel scandal widens, US authority seeks information

Mitsubishi Motors' fuel economy scandal has widened after reports that the Japanese automaker submitted misleading data on additional models than previously disclosed. On Wednesday, the company admitted it had overstated the fuel efficiency of over 600,000 cars, wiping off around 40% of its market value over three days. The news also prompted a raid by Japanese authorities on one of Mitsubishi’s facilities, while U.S. auto safety authorities said they were seeking more information. The scandal has raised questions about Mitsubishi's future, as it faces the prospect of huge lawsuits and fines. The latest case came as German auto giant Volkswagen struggles to restore its reputation after revelations of emissions rigging last year.
