Leclerc wins dramatic British Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc claimed victory at the British Grand Prix after a dramatic afternoon at Silverstone that saw Lewis Hamilton's hopes of a record 10th home win slip away.

The Ferrari driver took the lead at the start and held off the challenge of Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli before a late Safety Car helped secure the win.

Hamilton, who started third, suffered an early setback after being handed a five-second penalty for a false start. The Briton fought back into podium contention, overtaking Max Verstappen during the race, but late strategy decisions and another infringement dropped him out of the top three.

Mercedes' George Russell benefited from staying out when several frontrunners pitted during the late Safety Car period, moving into second place behind Leclerc.

Championship leader Antonelli looked set to challenge for victory after starting from pole, but steering problems forced an unscheduled pit stop before the Italian eventually retired from the race.

There was further disappointment for Red Bull as Max Verstappen crashed out in the closing stages, triggering the Safety Car that ultimately settled the outcome of the race.

The result hands Ferrari an important victory at Silverstone, while Hamilton was left to wait at least another year in his bid for an unprecedented 10th British Grand Prix triumph.
