Marnus Labuschagne top-scored for the Aussies with 48, while Steve Smith and Joe Burns were out for ducks.
The tourists got off to a perfect start under Ajinkya Rahane who is leading the side in place of Virat Kohli, who has returned home for the birth of his first child.
They grabbed Burns, Matthew Wade (30) and Smith before lunch, while Travis Head was dismissed for 38 and captain Tim Paine was out for 13.
India survived a hostile spell to end the day on 36-1, trailing by 159 runs.
They are 1-0 down in the series after a crushing eight-wicket defeat in the first Test.
