Williams had won four Grand Slam titles before Gauff was even born.

Meanwhile, second seed Naomi Osaka has also crashed out in the first round, losing in three sets to Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.

Over in the men's side, Novak Djokovic got his Wimbledon title defence underway with an easy win over Philipp Kohlschreiber.

He'll now play American Denis Kudla in the second round.
