As 800,000 US government workers contemplate their second missed paycheck due on Friday, the US Senate will vote on two competing proposals aimed at ending the ongoing government shutdown.
The votes will be heard on Thursday - one backed by Republicans, the other by Democrats - but both likely to fail.
