Buildings have been damaged in Australia after a strong earthquake shook an outback town.

Tenant Creek, a northern territory town of just 3,000 inhabitants, was hit by the 5.3 magnitude quake early on Thursday morning.

According to Geoscience Australia, the epicentre of the tremor was 40 kilometres south-west of the town at a depth of 10 kilometres.
