Israeli domestic intelligence chief says will resign on June 15

The head of Israel's domestic intelligence agency, Ronen Bar, announced he will resign on June 15 amid pressure from Prime Minister Netanyahu and ongoing legal proceedings. 

The Shin Bet chief made the announcement during a memorial event for Shin Bet members who have died in service, saying he was responsible for the security lapse that led to the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas. 

"As the head of the organization, I took responsibility for this- and now, on this special evening, symbolizing remembrance, bravery, and sacrifice, I have chosen to announce the fulfillment of that responsibility and my decision to end my tenure as head of the Shin Bet,” Bar said.

Netanyahu in March dismissed Bar, saying he lost confidence in him after the October 7 attack, prompting widespread disapproval and protests, who said the sacking undermines the state institutions. The Israeli Supreme Court temporarily blocked the dismissal after opposition lawmakers argued the move was unlawful. 

The Shin Ben chief in an affidavit last week told the Court Netanyahu's decision was based on his refusal to spy on anti-government protesters and the agency's investigation into corruption within the Prime Minister's office.

Netanyahu rejected the claims, saying: "The accusation according to which I allegedly demanded action against innocent civilians, or against a non-violent and legitimate protest during the protests of 2023, is an absolute lie."

On Sunday, Netanyahu submitted his own affidavit to the Court, accusing Bar of being a "liar" and stressed his decision to dismiss the chief was based on professional failures. 

The tiff between the two has exposed deepening rifts between Netanyahu's hardline Likud party and his government, and more moderate institutions within Israel.
