California has re-imposed restrictions on businesses and public spaces amid a spike in COVID-19 cases in the US state.

Governor Gavin Newsom ordered the suspension of all indoor activities at restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, zoos and museums for safety reasons.

Churches, gyms and hairdressers will also close.

The decision comes after California reported a 20 per cent rise in the number of people testing positive for the virus in the past two weeks.

The number of individuals in need of intensive care is also increasing.

There are currently over 330,000 coronavirus cases and more than 7,000 deaths in the American state.
