UAE hosts UN Peacekeeping Chiefs Workshop

The UN Peacekeeping Chiefs Workshop has opened in Abu Dhabi, bringing together police and military leaders from 23 countries.

Hosted by the UAE Ministry of Interior from August 31 to September 4, the workshop also includes representatives from the United Nations.

The event is part of ongoing cooperation between the UAE and the UN and focuses on improving the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations and their ability to respond to security and humanitarian challenges.

Discussions cover the challenges facing UN police, peacekeeping performance, emergency planning and operational readiness.

Participants are also exchanging expertise on policing that is responsive to local needs and gender-sensitive.

A key focus is stronger coordination between police and military units serving in UN peacekeeping missions.

UAE Police Attaché to the UN in New York, Colonel Saeed Al Dhaheri, said hosting the workshop reflects the UAE’s commitment to supporting UN peacekeeping efforts and international peace and security.

UN Police Adviser Lieutenant General Faisal said peace operations need more flexible and innovative approaches, making greater use of technology and data while strengthening preparedness and rapid response.

He said stronger police capabilities and closer coordination with military units are essential to protecting civilians, supporting stability and upholding the rule of law.

Acting UN Military Adviser Lieutenant General Cheryl Pearce said peacekeeping missions are facing increasingly complex conflicts, transnational threats, drones and growing information and technology challenges.

She said future missions must be more adaptable, mobile and responsive, with technology helping improve situational awareness and decision-making.

Pearce also stressed that the safety and security of peacekeepers must remain a priority, supported by proper training, strong capabilities, rapid medical support and lessons learned from previous incidents.
