Indian politician arrested over morphed picture of Modi on facebook

A member of a south Indian political party has been arrested for allegedly posting a morphed image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Facebook.

According to reports, the image depicted him with a begging bowl.

The member of Tamil Nadu's MDMK party, who has been charged with intent to disrupt peace and to create ill-will, has been sent to judicial custody after being produced in court.

This comes just months after a Manipur journalist was sentenced to a year's detention for posting a Facebook video that showed him criticising Chief Minister N Biren Singh as well as Modi.

Many critics, however, called the arrests a hindrance to free speech in India.
