Trudeau fires Canada's ambassador to China amid Huawei row

Canada's ambassador to China has been fired following his controversial comments about an extradition case involving Chinese telecoms giant Huawei.

In a statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he had asked John McCallum to step down without offering any reason for the decision.

Last week, McCallum had told reporters that Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou has a strong case against the US extradition. The next day he had issued a statement saying he "misspoke" and regretted creating "confusion".

Meng's detention has soured Canada's relations with Beijing.
