May to return to Brussels to attempt to reopen Brexit bill

The British Parliament has voted in favour of a Brexit amendment, which would seek "alternative arrangements" to replace the controversial Irish border backstop.

The backstop is an insurance policy to avoid a hard border between the Republic of Ireland, which is part of the EU and Northern Ireland, which belongs to the UK.

While the amendment carries no legal weight, it gives the Prime Minister more clout to return to Brussels and attempt to reopen Brexit negotiations to secure a legally binding change.

But MPs also voted in favour of an amendment to rule out a no deal scenario.
