Drone sightings briefly disrupts traffic at US airport

Flights were grounded for almost an hour at Newark International Airport in the US state of New Jersey on Tuesday night after reports of drone sightings nearby.

The flight crew of a Southwest flight and of a United flight reported the sightings, with one claiming the drone came within 30ft of their aircraft.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, with the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) highlighting the need to develop and deploy technologies to block drone activity near airports.

This comes after London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports had to shut operations following similar sightings last month.
